In the snowbound villages of Hida, Okuimokko-sha creates the “Yuki-Nyūdō.”
Born from offcuts of winter ladle-making, each piece is boldly carved with hatchet, deba knife, and saw—uniting traditional craftsmanship with the natural beauty of wood.
It is an art object that carries both playfulness and spirit, bringing a quiet yet vivid presence into your home.
■Maker: Okuimokko-sha
■Crafted in:Hida Region
■Material: Japanese Bigleaf Magnolia (Hō-no-ki)
An object that blends gently into everyday life, while adding a touch of playful spirit to the quiet spaces of your home.
Each figure bears a unique expression, bringing small stories into stillness and evoking the beauty of “harmony” and “ma” (the richness of empty space).
Crafted in Hida
Listening to the voice of the wood, each is hand-finished, carrying individuality and character that mass production can never capture.
Please choose the one that speaks to you.
Knots, warping, and tool marks remain just as they are.
Rather than flaws, they are lines drawn by nature itself.
The humble form of the Yuki-Nyūdō embodies the very essence of wabi-sabi aesthetics.
Grow With You
Over the years, the wood deepens in tone and warmth.
There is no “completion”—only a work that becomes richer as you nurture it in the rhythm of your own life.
Story of Yukiyu-do
The Yuki-Nyūdō is rooted in old folklore of Hida.
On snowy mornings, large hollows left in fresh snow were said to be the footprints of this one-eyed, one-legged giant who wandered before dawn—both feared and imagined by children.
Hō-no-ki and Hida
The Japanese bigleaf magnolia (hō-no-ki) has long supported Hida’s mountain culture. Its broad leaves were used for serving food, grilling dishes like hōba miso and hōba sushi, and as tools of daily life. Even today, it remains a symbol of local wisdom and resilience in the region’s food traditions.
