A spice curry spoon hand-carved by young Hida Takayama artisan Kimura.
Its flat shape with a subtle curve (“kaeshi”) is designed to scoop up light, soupy spice curries and basmati rice with ease—without spilling. The soft touch on the lips and the warmth of natural wood make this a truly unique piece.
■Maker: Kimura
■Material: Mountain Cherrywood
Carved from Hida’s mountain cherry, the spoon combines durability with graceful wood grain. Over time, the surface develops a richer sheen. Each piece is carefully shaped to feel light and natural in the hand, offering a gentle mouthfeel unlike metal.
This spoon enriches everyday dining, adding quiet elegance and warmth to the table.
No two are alike: each variation in grain, tone, and size is a mark of nature’s individuality—an embodiment of wabi-sabi, the Japanese aesthetic that finds beauty in imperfection.
There is no fixed “final form.” With every use, the wood deepens in color and becomes more familiar, shaped by your own life and hands. In this way, you are not only the user, but also the nurturer who completes the piece.
